300$ Northpole/Woods mattress full of holes

This is a Woods - North Pole BYO inflatable bed that we purchased at Canadian Tire to accommodate our family and friends overnight when they visit us once in a great great while. We opted for this solution considering that we barely have any visit. Overall it is pretty confortable and it would surely be an ideal solution when you don't have a second bedroom for your guests.

Since we bought it, our bed must have been used about 20 times overall, and only by one adult at a time, so never more than half of its weight capacity rating of 500 lbs. It has never met any children or pet that could have been a threat for it, and has always been used and stored in a living room with normal temperature and humidity conditions.

In other words there is no reason for the problems we have experienced with the mattress. The leaks began after only 5-6 times, within the first year of purchase. The first time you deal with it and fix it, thinking it must be a stand alone misfortune. Second time, you still cope. But then when it's the 5th or 6th time you find your guests sleeping on the floor because of a deflated air mattress, I must confess that the whole concept loses much of its charm and even becomes embarrassing.

Here's a close-up of the picture shown on the bag:

This is the air pump that came with our bed. It's like a cylinder that screws directly in a cylindrical socket built in the mattress. It is reversible: one side to inflate, one side to deflate. Trivial.

The pump model number is E236150. I noticed newer beds seem to come with different models so this is important should a replacement mattress become an option.

Now the holes. Some of the pictures below show a shiny layer covering the holes. This is a stuff manufactured by Coghlan's called "Airstop" vinyl repair. It's a liquid glue used to patch the holes. The glue and patches provided with the mattress did not work at all in our case because the holes were not on a flat surface. I have to admit that this Airstop stuff worked extremely well on this mattress. But with a constant flow of new holes on both sides, this patch solution was not an option.

As can be seen below, the hole broke out right in a fold or seam on th edge of oval shapes on the mattress. This one is the largest we had, but they all followed the same pattern.

Below is the same hole as above, but pictured when the mattress was inflated:

It couldn't be clearer that the holes are located right in recessed folds of the mattress, which is obviously a problem with the mattress design or a weakness in the material itself.

Below is a zoom-out showing many holes to substantiate my observations:

Same area, but this time deflated:

I'll go through all other holes one by one.

The next ones are taken just before we applied the liquid patch on it:

This is a new one pictured today when we took the mattress out the bag to take pictures.

And another one in progress:

We have also found and repaired other types of holes. We have no idea what may have caused them, but possibly the mattress was pinched during manutention:

Thanks for reading. I will hold this blog until the situation is resolved to our entire satisfaction. In the meantime, I am hoping to provide useful information to anyone interested in purchasing a Woods - North Pole bed.

  1. I don't have that many holes but on the first time use Company had to reinflate several times during the evening. Could not find the leak at all. Thought it might be the pump. Canadian Tire
was absolutely useless in trying to resolve the problem. Will keep your blog in site to find out what if anything happens.

  2. I had a similar leak on another type of air bed at the same location. I used Weldbond glue and a piece of leather strap just a bit wider than the seam. Has held for 2 weeks now and counting. I discovered a leak on my Woods unit (6 years)identical to yours located on the side. I will try to fix with Canadian Tire vinyl repair kit (9.99). Seems to me that this pinhole leak is where crease lines cross and I would suspect material failure. Haven't had any other problems

  3. Glenn , I have also had the same problem with my Woods air bed and was looking for the Company web site so that i could tell them about this problem. When looking i happened to come across your blog and see that i am not alone in this matter. Also Canadian Tire has reviews on this bed and they are not very good ones either. This can only be the result of poor vinyl welds and we are not alone in this situation. Woods needs to be aware of this and should be correcting the defect and issuing new mattresses to the customers like us that have purchased the product.

  5. I have just gone out and bought a DOUBLE air mattress - it says on the cardboard that this unit is a queen but sure doesn't look like it to me. The second time we used the BYO Bed it leaked along a seam - I used the Air stop and it fixed it but then another leak started further down that seam - I am NOT HAPPY with this expensive fold up bed - it was approx $250 to purchase - I have not tried calling Cdn Tire parts as I don't feel I should have to pay for a replacement mattress and I don't have the original receipt for it either

  8. Hi we did not get pin hole leaks what happen with ours is that one of the internal cells split so now we have a big hump on one side grat for kids to play slide on,as for the pump you can use multiple types as they have adjustment heads that will work,my pump was lost so i had to get a replacement and it wasn't the original as it was no where to be found. I hope this helps others in making a purchase on this type of bed from woods.

  10. Update: After many attempts and a lot of trouble getting a hold of someone, Woods - or was it Northpole - “kindly” offered me to BUY a new mattress for 35$. Even though I thought they were crooks, I accepted the deal and ordered one.

It turns out that the replacement mattress is a completely different model. It uses the same pump, but does not have these oval recess shapes in it. It is rather made with longitudinal oblong chambers (abit like this). Although not as comfy as the previous one, I am slightly more confident for its reliability. Time will tell (but not to me, read on.)

So I turned around and sold the bed altogether (with a "new" mattress) on Kijiji and used the money to buy a Coleman instead (see this link).

I can say that the Coleman is much better overall, more comfortable, tighter, and takes much less space when in storage.

Screw Woods/Northpole. I will remember you folks for low quality products and really bad customer support. Long life to Coleman.

  12. Thank you. I had the same problem, I did not know about the liquid vinyl repair kit so I ended up disposing of it. Will try another brand. I wonder if this is why Canadian tire no longer carries this brand?

  18. I, too, am having an issue with finding a replacement pump. It just stopped working and there seems to be broken plastic pieces inside. I am in the US. Has anyone found a compatible pump for sale, or, is anyone interested in selling their pump? I am sorry to hear the problems that others are having but the bed is fine so far. It is just useless without a pump. Thanks.

  19. Placed a request for anyone selling the Model np-169b pump. I am in the US and it was made by Northpole. Guess that company is selling under Woods in Canada. My bed is still fine, believe it or not, but without a pump it is useless. As the poster said in the October posting, mine sounds like it has broken plastic pieces inside of it. Had thought of some way to convert a different pump with adapters but could not come up with anything. Does anyone have a working pump they wish to sell? Thanks.

  21. I am having the same issues with holes on my Coleman Double High Queen. Getting small pin holes in the same locations as you. Must be a regular occurrence with these inflatables. I use mine daily and lasted only about 8 months. I patch 1 hole and another one pops up after a day.

  31. Have one, wasn't able to get repairs to hold. If I was lucky and they had held, I would not use the stand again as one of the black flat topped supports broke...funny thing though is no leaks where the support broke.

    When children were younger, we got them out of the city to provincial camp grounds. Never used inflable mattresses. Found a used hardtop 4 sleeper camper with sponge mattresses to hold our sleeping bags for $400. There were no other amenities in it. Used it for sleeping and shelter from the rain. Provincial campgrounds had pay as you use showers, logs to buy for a camp fire, and access to clean drinking water. Family had a great time and when the children got older, I sold the camper for the same price I paid for it. :}
